Our Greed At Christmas

At Christmas time, we are all excited. New stuff that's free from a mythical Saint who breaks into your house every year to give you stuff. But what are we forgetting in our greed? Many things, including the true meaning of Christmas. So let have a look at what our greed covers up in Christmas.

Firstly, and most importantly, we forget Christmas's True Meaning. We’re all so absorbed by our presents that we forget that it’s Jesus’ birthday, and that’s what Christmas is about. We are all eating a Christmas ham when we should have said grace beforehand to give thanks for it. Greed again, we were hungry so we ate.

We are also greedy in the way that half the time we don’t say “thank you” to whoever gave us our gifts half the time. There are some exceptions and special situations like secret santas where you can hardly thank you gift giver as implies the “secret” half off “secret santa”. But otherwise you should remember to thank whoever gave you your present.

Finally, there is the matter of the actual presents. We are sometimes disappointed about our presents and barely manage to hide it. We then either exchange it for something else or sell it when we should really be grateful for it. If people are ungrateful, perhaps people will remember the True Meaning, but perhaps they will just be too annoyed that they didn’t get gift that it will cloud their judgment even more.

These are just a few of the problems that are caused at Christmas by our modern-day traditions. Other problems are caused by things like commercialisation, but these are problems caused by greed. So this Christmas take a little of your time to thank someone, or say a prayer before you dig into that massive Christmas ham.

Keeping Ourselves Safe

Our class recently did KOS - Keeping Ourselves Safe. Some of the stuff I learned was that anyone can be the victim or abuser. If you do abuse someone you have to face the consequences. Some of these can be a fine or imprisonment. You can go to people you trust for help, like your teachers, family or friends.

Term 3 reflection

In term 3 we did some good stuff such as:
Technology at St Kevins, my group did cooking.
The skiing program in Ohau, I went and LOVED it.
Singing cup, I didn't get in but gave it a good try, and Guzman won for House.

A chellenge was to get a good time in cross country even while being sick and only just recovering.

Some things I am looking foward to are camp, for days of fun!!!
School athletics, it will be fun and a good compeditive sport for us all.

Essay - Biologist

Have you ever thought about what you want to be when you are older? How about a Biologist? Biologists are a group of scientists who study in labs and places where there is life in general. They need some specific skill sets but it's a rewarding job in the enviroment (& helping save it!) with a pay ranging from 62K - 168K per year. You need to work for it though; A Bachelor's degree in Biological sciences or Biology is needed to take up this role.

Biologists sometimes get special tasks in marine biology, Wolf Biology! (yes, thats a real thing) Biotechnology or Immunology, but they all really lead back to the main subject, Biology. Some biologists work at sea, Some work in the forest and some even study specific animals; pointedly the Wolf Biologist. These different types of biologists help us get a better understanding of the world of life around us. We can even get a better understanding of dinosaurs!

A Biologist normally studies living organisms, but there are exceptions like Biotechnologists who study how tech can help living organisms e.g. making a robotic arm that can be controlled by the brain. They mostly study life; more specifically organisms that are related to it and the enviroment and  Biologists also study animals and the body to understand them better.

A Biologist's other work can include Agriculture to help farming and to help grow bigger and better crops, cleaning the enviroment and rivers to help trees grow and plants live longer and have more chance of survival, and also to help fish thrive and re-fill the rivers. They also help with conservation to help support endangered animals and plants in their natural enviroment. Medicine is another way they help, finding new, more effective cures to harmful diseases, and helping Industry with safe waste disposal and less contamination.

To be a Biologist you need to have a specific skill set but also a good brain. some of these skills include: Good, practical scientific skills, (it’s no good being a Immunologist when you are better suited to Wolf Biology!) An inquiring mind to ask and solve questions and equations, The ability to think clearly, and logically and a methodical approach to work.

These are just  a few of the skills and rewards of the career choice Biology. I want to do this job because I would get to study the enviroment and help figure out some of the secrets of the planet. So I ask again, “Have you ever thought about what you want to be when you are older?” I have.

An email

From: God
To: all people

Why I give you free will: To help others but also choose your own path. I wanted you to have free will so you could be an indivdual, not all people the same.

How I wish you to use your free will: You should use your free will to help the enviroment. I wanted you to make peace with each other, not kill over MY land.

What I most want from you: To use your free will in the best possible way and make the best choices. The best way for the enviroment, not you.

Bucketlist Writing

Skydiving

The plane that took us up was painted like a shark. The small air vessel was for parachuting purposes more than anything else and had a special door in the side to prove it. The door was the way we would exit the plane, 12,000ft in the air. The only thing between us and doom was a parachute…

As the plane seemingly rose, while in reality it was me falling. My stomach dropped and I let out a scream that  never reached my ears, never left my throat because of the lack of oxygen that comes with being 12,000ft up in the air. The plane soared overhead and I lost sight of it as I passed through the cloud and the chute released. Suddenly the speed ceased to a glide and I could heave a sigh of relief.

The descent was slow so I decided to take in the scenery. The land lay before me like a oil canvas. The mountains rose slowly and steadily as we fell, gliding up to meet us. The air was fresh and slowly I regained the ability to breath properly. Under the mountains, the trees seemingly shot up from the ground, like spears being thrown by a giant. Soon I landed, stumbled and fell as I regained my footing and the ground felt odd after being weightless for so long

As I looked at the videos from my GoPro, I was reminded of the rest of my Bucketlist. The video was inspiring, and I decided that I would complete the next item on my list, running with wolves. But the day for that would be soon. I would complete my list, one thing at a time. My list was big. I had a lifetime of adventure ahead of me!

Book Reveiw

The Ranger's Apprentice Book 7

Erak’s Ransome, by John Flannagan, is a science fiction book set in the kingdom of Araluan, and is on the more realistic side of science fiction.

In the book, the Skandian (warrior/pirate tribe), Oberjarl (leader) has been captured and held for ransom. The rest of his crew come to Araluan for help. Will and Halt (Will’s teacher) go with them along with Princess Cassandra (or Evanlyn) to haggle the ransom price. After this happens, Halt and Evanlyn are captured and imprisoned as Will searches for his lost horse.

Dehydrated and lost, he is found by a travelling tribe who have his horse and he must race to get him back. He wins and with help from the tribe he frees Halt and Evanlyn as they are about to be executed. They then defeat the evil war leader and set Erak free.

What I thought was good about this book is that it had some intense moments and it left me wanting more. The book could also leave you hanging. Some bad things were that there was WAY too much talking in some parts. The areas shed light on some parts but are BORING.

The book’s theme was a realistic sifi and was a good read. There was no message I could see in the book. The books were actually written to encourage the authors son to enjoy reading, then it was sent off to a publisher and suddenly it was a book series. The author, like all the others, was trying to communicate, “Reading is Fun.”

I think that this book is a good read and would recommend it to anyone who like science fiction. The book had so many good parts and I rate it 8 ½ out of 10.

Holy Orders

In Holy Orders you are anointed by the bishop in your area. The Orders start by being called up by the Bishop. The person replies in Roman to say “I’m Present.” They then lie on the floor in a gesture of humility and obedience.
The people present are asked to sing to help the candidates to be ready for the orders. The Bishop then lays his hand the person and they take vows of obedience.
How the ceremony end varies from country to country. In one the people come forward and have a blessing. In another, the Bishop comes to kiss the Priest's hands, as they are the hands that will anoint, bless and baptise people.

Imagine being a... Writing

Biologist

As I put the finishing touches on the project, my eyes fill with pride. The small beings are ready and pass the teamwork test like a family of beavers cutting down a tree.

They work together better than humans ever have. When they sign a peace treaty they go straight back to war. But these are a peaceful people. They will work together in any situation. They will thrive where we have failed.

They are like humans, and the best thing is they live. They are organic beings, not robots. The team is alive. They are useful and have all the traits of living beings. I am the first to build life in science. The first ever person to make life from scratch.
Imagine being a biologist...

My ECB experience

The task of being and ECB (Early Childhood Buddy) is a good one. The fun of playing with the preschoolers combined with the responsibility of being a leader. I have a buddy called Vilivea (pronounced Villy) and have been his buddy for a while now. The main task is to prepare them for school at St. Josephs. The buddy is helped by the student until they are year 1 (the year ABOVE new entrance) and the student is year 8. The students bond with the people in kindy and help and teach the new entrant. Being an ECB is a fun and rewarding task. Ask your principal if they can start an ECB program today!

My poem about Armageddon

As armageddon is meant to be coming AGAIN I wrote a poem about the new reason for it.

Armageddon

By Joe Spillane

Armageddon's coming, this has happened before
Once again the world is believed to be at death's door.
On September 24 the world will go boom
Or so it is believed by those who went to the moon.

Armageddon’s coming, we are on high alert
Doom from above, like a speeding dart.
In only a few months, the bolder from above
We will shoot it down like an arrow in a dove.

Armageddons coming, we are preparing for a war
Against the deadly space rocks from the place’s core.
NASA is hoping with Illuminati strength
To destroy the rock as it tumbles at arms length.

Our science

Me and Kaleb (http://kalebtc.blogspot.co.nz/) did some balloon car science to figure out how far a balloon car can go with different attachments.

Here is our conclusion to this experiment. (A picture of the graph can be found on Kalebs blog as I am having technical difficulties with pasting it on my blog.)

The balloon car went the furtherest with no attachments, only a balloon  with 2 puffs of air in it (time seconds: 3.7 distance meters 1.9.) With the paper parachute, it covered less distance but did it quicker, with an average of 2 seconds and 0.6m. The glad wrap parachute did worst. It averaged at 1.2m and 3.5 seconds. We figured out that the normal car goes furtherest because the parachute acts like a wind blocker and countered the exaust pipe (a straw) with a wind proof layer of plastic or paper.

Chapter Summary Lord of the Flies

Chapter 1:
Introducing the characters and setting the scene. The boys are on a deserted island and have survived a plane crash when the plane had been shot down. The boys take names and set up on a mountain. They hold a vote and Ralph is elected leader. He is a resourceful person to have around and his only weakness is that at first he bullies Piggy. Jack is a strong person, but unlike most people has a different way of thinking. He thinks that because he is choir leader he should be the boss. Piggy is smart, but bullied because he is fat. The others should listen to him as he is the smartest. They go hunting in the forest below and find a piglet. Jack hesitates and the prey escapes. This chapter was very full of information, and showed the situation the boys were in.

Chapter 2:
The boys are at the base which they now call the platform. They make some new rules, one of which is that a conch that summoned the boys who weren’t Piggy or Ralph. The boys bully Piggy about his name and steal his glasses to make a fire. The fire is a success, but quickly goes out and sparks light up half the forest. The boys hold a discussion and the conch rule is broken. Piggy complains and is put down and patronised about his name. They then realise a boy is missing and discount him for being killed by the fire. This chapter Shows the boys are coping and that they have made some achievement on the island, but not listening to Piggy, who is the smartest. They instead bully him as he is fat.

Chapter 3:
Ralph and Simon are making huts on the beach for shelter at night. They are interrupted by Jack who has just returned from hunting. He asks something but is interrupted by a crash that is the hut falling down. Simon grins sheepishly and apologies. Jack asks again and is successful in asking if Ralph wants to join that nights hunt. Ralph refuses, the huts still on his mind. Simon sneaks off and finds a log in the forest and sits there. He comes up with some poetry about the scenery. This chapter was full of what I felt were unnecessary details that could have been left out from the book altogether. They may have some importance later in the book but at the moment  they feel unneeded.

Chapter 4:
Some of the ‘littluns’ are playing on the beach making sandcastles. Some of the older boys sneak up on them and destroy the castles. One ‘littlun’ runs away crying. A bigger boy follows him to the rockpools and starts throwing stones. Ralph comes by and spots a ship. They run back to the fire only to find that the fire has gone out and the choir people have gone hunting. Suddenly they emerge from the trees chanting: Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood. Ralph is still annoyed about the fire and tells Jack so. They cook the pig and Simon shares his pork with Piggy.  The chapter shows some pastimes of both groups of boys, the littluns and the bigger boys. It also confirms that  Jack and his choir are PSYCHOS. complete PSYCHOS. ‘Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood.’? Definitely a bunch of psychos.

Chapter 5:
Ralph calls a meeting with the conch. The others, including psychos the start to arrive and the meeting begins. Ralph is nervous and wants to get it over with. They are there to address the issue of the fire, but it quickly turns to the beast. The littlun called Percival tells the biguns and littluns about the beast. The group splits 2 ways: Ralph and the non-psychos and Jack and his psychos. Ralph wants the fire to keep going, whereas Jack wants to hunt the beast. The psychos run off and do a (psycho) dance on the beach then go to the huts. This was an interesting chapter and shows me 2 things: the beast and how deluded Jack is becoming.
The beast is most likely a dream, or an illusion, but with nuclear warfare going on, it could be anything. Jack and his psychos are definitely getting more deluded as time passes. First Jack wanted to be leader. Nothing wrong with that. Kill the pig. Cut her throat. Spill her blood. Somewhat deluded and psycho. Wanting to hunt the beast and kill it? deluded to the max.

Chapter 6:
A parachute man is shot out of his plane. He dies and lands at the top of the mountain. the boys mistake him for the beast and hold a meeting. They decide to hunt it on the only place of the island they haven't explored yet: the mini island over the land bridge. Jack is in charge of the hunt. This chapter was interesting and leads up to unexpected levels. The dream of hunting the beast is taken from the dream world and is now a reality.

Chapter 7:
The boys go hunting and find a pig run and Ralph is excited because he has wounded a pig and then they find the beast (parachute man) on the mountain. They all run off with their tails between their legs. The parachute man is mistaken for a beast and the boys run. (sigh). If you are going to survive you need better vision than that. Should have gone to Specsavers.

Chapter 8:
The boys kill a pig (finally) and mount its head on a stick. They are suddenly scared and run to the beach, while Simon goes to his log with the “Lord of the Flies.” The beast speaks to Simon in his head and tells him the other boys will kill him then has a seizure. This chapter is quite revealing on the beast as it is imagination and cannot harm the boys. It also brings up more questions. Who is the Lord of the Flies? Will the boys kill Simon?

Chapter 9:
Simon is killed after he releases the parachute man and Ralph and Piggy and the other boys are catching up when he bursts out of the trees screaming about the parachute man. The others mistake him for a beast and beat… him… up. And he died. The boys are reunited (for now) and Simon come back from the log only to be killed by the others. Mistaking a boy for a beast. Should have gone to specsavers.

Chapter 10:
Jack and Ralph split into 2 groups: hunters and Ralphs 4 big boy and littluns. He lights a fire with Piggy’s glasses and is about to fall asleep when some of the hunters attack and steal Piggy’s glasses. In the confusion Ralph and Eric ( Guinea Pigs!!! ;-) ) pummel each other instead of the attackers. (Some very nasty shots get in.) The hunters are victorious and steal the glasses. The boys aren’t going to get a specsavers remark this time because it was night and the fire was out. But still, I would post a guard on the look out. They also thought it was ANOTHER beast. They saw 2 die, (supposedly) so how many are there? 3 beasts can’t hide for long. And on a ISLAND of all places!!! I’m going to go fume now.

Chapter 11:
The boys on Ralph's side go to Castle Rock to get Piggy’s glasses. They fight over them and Piggy makes a speech of peace. Roger releases a rock on the bridge. It hits Piggy and Kills him. ‘Stuff comes out of his head and turns red. He is washed away by the tide. This chapter was actually scary. The rock was alright but the death. It's not good. Does the author hate humans or something? Evil. And descriptive.

Chapter 12 - End of book:
The hunters do what they do best: hunt. Ralph is to be hunted and he runs. He hides in a bush, but the hunters set fire to it. They chase him through the shelters and he trips: over a Naval Officer. He prepares to beg for mercy as he discovers this, and he has a breakdown. The boys reunite and are rescued as the Officer saw the smoke. - end. This chapter is a weird one as they go. The boys are rescued - Ralph has a mental breakdown. The boys hunt him - They set the island on fire. I have enjoyed reading this book and think it was a good book. - End of summary.

The Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is part of the Holy Trinity. The Trinity is God the father, God the son and God the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is an immensely powerful being. It helps you make the right choices and helps you help others.

When the Disiples were baptised with the Spirit, it was in the form of wind and fire. It inspired them to preach the word and filled them with courage.

My Awesome Descrpitve Writing

I walked down the drive way, relying almost completely on my sence of smell. my vision was blurry but i could still get around to find my way back to the wood.
Unutuaral smells were everywhere, with only a few plants... and even they were unknown. It was like they were plants but also not plants at the same time. Other worldly.
The smell of forest was dim, but it was there and stronger down an unatural trail of stone. The only food came out of the large iron tubes lined up along the stone
path, in front of large wooden boxes that homo sapiens come out of. The big brown rectangle of wood opened then the human came out then went back in blabbering in the
normal tounge of AHHHHHHHH!!!. The sound must be a warning cry, like that of the deer and rabbits I hunt, that a predator is about so I turn away into the unnatural
stone trail. A human is there. He turns and barrels away at the sight of me.

What went well (and didn't) so far in year 7

The term has been... eventful with its highs and lows. Lets focus on the highs for now.
Highs:
Science has had some interesting things in it such as: making crystals, looking at salt crystals under a microscope, made slime with coke, red bull and milk.
The ANZAC project we have been doing was also prety cool. We have to watch some videos about WWI and then write about it. It taught us about the first WW.

What I look forward:
Next Friday we get to go to tech at St Kevins Collage. The subjects for tech are wood work, sewing (prononced so-ing), cooking and art. Last time I did sewing with some of my other classmates. This time I think we are doing wood work. We are also going on science trips and we will have to write an aplication to go to one of the following: Elephant rocks, Vainshed World, the dams or the Kurow bridge.

What hasn't gone so well:
Not much really, exept for teachers giving students Red Bull without them knowing what it is.

Typhoon Tourism Damage - TTD - typhoon hyain

THE EFFECT ON THEM
Resorts at major destinations have cancellation rates of 30 to 40 per cent since the storm hit, the cancellations are still coming in as they recover.

HOW THEY COPED:
They wouldn't lose too much money because they only lost 30 to 40 per cent of their visitors since the storm hit but they would of had to pay money to fix the damage.

HOW THEY RECOVERED

They took their houses off stilts and put blocks under their homes and hotels instead, bringing back the customers. The income helped them pay for more extensive repair, and better living in homes/hotels. The typhoon was a major setback, but helped them improve their homes so they could get ready for another one.

TYPHOON!!! (Caritas Responce)

(DISASTER!)
In 2013, November the 7th, a typhoon warning was issued to the Visayas region in the philippines. A large typhoon was headed to land in at least 12 hours. Because it was given a girl name, Haiyan, the people didn’t think it was going to be as big as it was. It was the largest typhoon EVER RECORDED to hit land. The typhoon was estimated to have wind speeds of 185 k/h. It was actually 348 k/h. It hit on the 8th of november and flooded the streets, shattered windows and killed 6340. The island was devastated. Super typhoon haiyan destroyed everything.

(Responce)
Caritas responded quickly and raised money to help them. They flew to the islands taking supplies, tools and health kits with them. They cleaned up the mess and helped to repair houses that could be fixed and set up tarpaulins for the homeless. Caritas helped clean up after the typhoon.

(Recover)
Houses were rebuilt using fallen coconut trees wood. People began to regrow their food and crops with seeds from Caritas. Some shops were re-opened. Things such as garlic, sausages, oil and milo were sold. (So they didn’t have houses but they had milo. Even when helpless adults still worry about their hot drink in the morning.)

(Reduce)
Caritas helped reduce the typhoon’s impact and decided to help reduce future impact. Houses were tied down with metal straps, stronger water pipes were put in place, food storage was built and an new typhoon shelter was built. Some glass house were built and sheltered crops. Stronger glass was installed and many people grew their own crops. EVERYONE now had their own taps outside their house.

(Readiness)
The Visayas region is now ready for another typhoon. They have a new typhoon shelter, improved water storage and pipes and know what to do next time. This may have been a tragedy, but it was also an opportunity to learn what to do, especially surviving the biggest typhoon ever to hit land.

Edited Quick Write

The car was our sanctuary on the safari trip. But one lion came closer. It came up to the window. The one lioness of the pride came closer until the big round brown eyes peered into the car. The golden, flowing fur shimmered in the afternoon sunlight and a single, almost invisible gash of brown fur ran along the length of its body, right down its spine. The brown eyes were like brown orbs of light that showed an intelligence only lions could know. Then… The car door whipped open! The lioness had bitten the door handle and opened the car! My shrill piercing scream shattered the stunning silence like a hammer through ice, and I quickly shut the car door and locked it. A great ending to an awesome trip!

My goal was to use more similes and metafores in my writing to make it more interesting for readers you can see this because of the hammer through ice and brown orbs of light statements.
